About DigitalCommons @ Fort Lewis College

The mission of John F. Reed Library's DigitalCommons @ Fort Lewis College is to enable ease of access and long term preservation of the intellectual contributions by members of the Fort Lewis College community, including faculty, staff and students. In addition to providing learning resources for our students, we strive to provide a connection between the work and learning of Fort Lewis College and the surrounding community through these contributions.

Our first goal in this endeavor is to enhance the undergraduate learning experience by digitally archiving and providing access to the best undergraduate scholarly and creative works by Fort Lewis College students in a variety of formats. We encourage you to send us your ideas for materials to be contributed.

As a digital repository, the Library seeks to provide support as part of the Open Access publishing movement by making research widely available, with the opportunity for authors' to reserve their intellectual property rights particularly with regard to their constituencies of students and colleagues.

About Institutional Repositories

Institutional Repositories (IRs) bring together all of a University's research under one umbrella, with an aim to preserve and provide access to that research.

IRs are an excellent vehicle for working papers or copies of published articles and conference papers. Presentations, senior theses, and other works not published elsewhere can also be published in the IR.

Where can I learn more about IRs?

The Association of Research Libraries is a good resource for information about Institutional Repositories. The following paper, "The Case for Institutional Repositories: A SPARC Position Paper" by Raym Crow, defines Institutional Repositories and argues their merits within an academic institution.
